Spin-transfer-induced precessional magnetization reversal

چکیده
A magnetoelectronic device is proposed in which a spin-current pulse produces a rapid reversal of the magnetization of a thin film nanomagnet. A spin-transfer torque induces the reversal and the switching speed is determined by the precession frequency of the magnetization in a thin film element’s demagnetization field. Micromagnetic simulations show that this switching occurs above a threshold pulse current and can be faster than 50 ps. In contrast to present spin-transfer devices, the switching does not require an initial fluctuation or deviation of magnetic layers from collinear alignment and is far more energy efficient. This device operates at room temperature and can be realized with present-day magnetic nanostructure technology. © 2004 American Institute of Physics. @DOI: 10.1063/1.1739271#

Time-domain studies of very-large-angle magnetization dynamics excited by spin transfer torques
We describe time-domain measurements which provide information about the large-angle nonlinear dynamics of nanomagnets excited by spin-transfer torque from a spin-polarized current. Sampling-oscilloscope measurements, which average over thousands of experimental time traces, show that the mean reversal time for spin-transfer-driven magnetic switching has a steplike dependence on magnetic field,...
متن کاملReducing the critical switching current in nanoscale spin valves
The current induced magnetization reversal in nanoscale spin valves is a potential alternative to magnetic field switching in magnetic memories. We show that the critical switching current can be decreased by an order of magnitude by strategically distributing the resistances in the magnetically active region of the spin valve. In addition, we simulate full switching curves and predict a new pr...
متن کاملCurrent-induced magnetization reversal in terms of power dissipation
Magnetization excitation and reversal induced by spin-transfer torques is described in terms of power received or dissipated in a macrospin system. This approach provides a clear and intuitive understanding of the effect of both applied magnetic fields and injected spin-polarized currents on magnetization reversal. It is illustrated by solving the case of magnetization reversal in a nanopillar ...
متن کاملSpin-transfer torque switching in magnetic tunnel junctions and spin-transfer torque random access memory
We present experimental and numerical results of current-driven magnetization switching in magnetic tunnel junctions. The experiments show that, for MgObased magnetic tunnelling junctions, the tunnelling magnetoresistance ratio is as large as 155% and the intrinsic switching current density is as low as 1.1× 10 A cm. The thermal effect and current pulse width on spin-transfer magnetization swit...
متن کاملRelaxing-Precessional Magnetization Switching
A new way of magnetization switching employing both the spin-transfer torque and the torque by a magnetic field is proposed. The solution of the Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert equation shows that the dynamics of the magnetization in the initial stage of the switching is similar to that in the precessional switching, while that in the final stage is rather similar to the relaxing switching. We call the...
